Alicante is a very popular area of Spain, with its beautiful coast and southern temperatures. It is a province found in the southern region of the Valencian Community, bordered by Murcia, the Province of Valencia, Albacete, and the wonderful coast of the Mediterranean. The city of Alicante is one of Spain’s oldest cities, and is the second largest city in the Valencian Community.
This part of Spain is truly beautiful, with quite a mountainous terrain, in particular to the north and west. The beauty of the area is a real appeal to foreign property purchasers but the prime reason so many northern Europeans, especially British, purchase property in this area is the climate. For such a small area, it actually has quite a range of climates which can be separated into three types. Mostly, you will experience a semi-arid climate which means long, hot summers and mild winters. In the northern areas by the sea, for example, Cabo de la Nao, you will find a true Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. In the inner areas, such as Villena, the climate is a mix of a Mediterranean climate and a Continental climate, which means slightly cooler summers, with more rain, and cooler winters with possibility of snow in higher areas.
Alicante is an excellent region in which to buy property in Spain. Near to the beautiful city of Valencia, not too far from either Madrid or Barcelona, and a hop and skip away from Andalusia, its location means exploration of Spain is easy. You will also be within reach of the beautiful Balearic Islands, such as Ibiza and Mallorca. Saying all that, there is plenty to see within the province itself and many lovely locations to choose from. For this reason, when looking for property in Costa Blanca (Alicante), its best to really explore the region before deciding on one location.
Some points apply to those planning on buying a home or a holiday home in Costa Blanca Alicante. Firstly, the main towns are really buzzing in summer, with plenty to see and do, and a real energy in the air. In winter, however, it’s a different story. That’s not to say it’s not enjoyable in the winter, but you should make sure to at least experience the area during summer and winter, to really get a feel for how it changes. Secondly, although Spain is generally cheaper than the UK, for example, in terms of Spanish property prices, there are people who will sell real estate for really inflated prices. This happens particularly in the touristy areas. So, make an effort to explore the less populated outskirts of the towns and cities. Also, if you speak Spanish, or have someone with you who speaks Spanish, you will have all the properties available to you which are not sold by the English speaking real estate agents.
