A very strange thing happened today...
...we wake up to the eeriest light. We have been living under the biggest cloud and deluges of rain for two days but this is really strange. The light or lack of it is a surreal yellow glow which I can only describe as reminiscent of the smogs in 50's England. At the same time there is a small earthquake. Lasting for only seconds, there is a bang and the house shakes and the odd small ornament falls over. This is about 7.45am.
I had known that there had been an earthquake last week somewhere in Andalucia which had done some structural damage. Is this connected? aftershocks?
A quick check of the local news and yes there was one reported somewhere near Seville measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale. Several aftershocks were also felt. And looking a little further down there had been one at Hondon de Los Frailes in September in September as well(3.5 on the Richter scale.
As the awful weather cuts into our caminos up here in the Rambla de Nogalte I am reminded that this coming week there will be a Memorial Service and the unveiling of a memorial to the victims of the 1973 floods in Puerto Lumbreras - the date of that flood? 18/19 October 1973. 87 people died then and the economic and physical ruin of that event has taken a long time to be repaired. Puerto Lumbreras's face is really changing fast now. I want to be at that event - the last day of our fiesta. In the meantime we have experienced this strange day, our cat dying of leukemia in Lorca and there was nothing to be done today except wait it out.... his death, this strange weather, and who knows, after shocks.
