A functional market town that has sprung up out of the old mining industry in the area. The region used to mine the mountain ranges which were rich in lead, zinc, silver, iron and alum. The remnants of the mining industry can be seen throughout the region.
This is the central shopping area for a number of satellite housing estates, such as Camposol.
There are many useful DIY (bricolage) shops just out of town towards Puerto Mazarrón and the outskirts.
