It is not surprising that droves of tourists make a beeline for the Province of Tarragona every year. The obvious destination is the golden beaches of the Costa Daurada, but the region is much more than just sun, sea and sand. Tarragona itself is a wonderful city with more than 2,000 years of history – it was the Romans’ first capital of Spain and it still houses the best-preserved Roman monuments on the Iberian Peninsula. Further south, the Ebro Delta nature reserve is a unique home to wildlife and a must for any ornithologist. Inland, there are vineyards, olive groves and the medieval villages that inspired Picasso to invent Cubism. You will also be delighted by the region’s rich history – in the city of Tortosa, Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities coexisted for centuries and the castles in the area hark back to the time when the River Ebro was the frontier between Moorish and Christian Spain and the Knights Templar fought their Iberian crusades.
