Bringing Business Together

Your Name:
Gaile Griffin Peers
Where are you from?:
The UK via Cyprus
Where do you live now?:
Jávea
Who did you come here with?:
Partner / Husband / Wife
What's your best bit of advice for people thinking of doing the same as you?:
Come and talk to me and lets work together instead of competing. Business Networking can be an important part of the stability and survival of small businesses - so extending that working with other networking groups is also important for a Business Club
What plans do you have for your future in Spain?:
I want to bring as many of the English Speaking businesses in Marina Alta together as I can. I want those businesses to prosper, to network and to build on the good things that we as expatriates regardless of nationality, bring to this part of Spain.
Why did you decide to come here?:
Because having lived in Cyprus for three years I couldn't bear the thought of living away from the Mediterranean
What did you leave behind?:
one son in Cyprus and another in the UK - you put them down for a minute and the next thing you know they have taken root and don't want to move!
What work do you do?:
I run Marina Alta Business Club
What made you choose this location? Did you know much about it before you moved here?:
I chose Jávea because my family has lived here for 20 years
Tell us about the place you live? What's it like (a house, apartment, flat, etc)? What are your neighbours like?:
I live in a villa on the foot hills of the Montgo and breakfast looking inland across the valley towards Vals. Our neighbours are delightful and friendly
What's the best thing about where you live?:
Its quiet, has great views and is on the edge of a National Park
What have you learned about your area that you think other people should know?:
How important do you think it is to be able to speak Spanish?:
Very - not learning it, or at least trying is insulting our hosts, who we then oblige to learn English, Dutch, German, French etc - just because we are too lazy to learn Spanish... Having said all that, my Spanish is poor - but it is, slowly, getting better!

Javea (Xábia)

Population: 28,500

Javea (Xábia) is a resort town on the Costa Blanca in Alicante province lying midway between Valencia to the north and Alicante to the south. Jávea is protected from harsh winter winds of the north by Montgó enjoying a unique micro-climate that the World Health Organisation named as one of the healthiest in the world.

There are more recorded hours of sunshine per year in Javea than in any other place in Spain, making it a popular place to buy property for affluent north Europeans. As well as toursist from overseas many Spaniards come to Javea with the busiest period during August.

Jávea is made up of Javea old town, Javea port and the beach area.

The old town is a maze of narrow winding streets with ancient churches and houses with wrought iron balconies and gothic-style windows.

The harbour and fishing port has a numerous restraurants and bars serving delicious fresh-caught fish and overlooking the Mediteranean sea.

The Arenal Beach area is home to most of the shops, bars and restaurants.

Jávea is a relaxing town offering many museums, weekly open air markets and spectacular views of the area from nearby Montgó.

In the 1990's, the police station (then part of the Ayuntamiento) was moved to a purpose-built location in order to open a tourist office in its original home. But, when builders began work on relaying the floor they discovered fourteenth century graves (complete with skeletons!) Today several of the rock-cut graves (without their skeletal inmates) have been preserved and can be seen under a glass floor.

An imposing limestone mountain (Montgó) rises up 750m from the plain just a few hundred metres from the sea and almost parallel to the coastline between Jávea and neighbouring Dénia. Montgó is home to over 600 different species of plants, some of which are unique to this area. You can climb to the top of Montgó from all sides which is an enjoyable journey through a varied landscape of croplands, pine forests, scrubland and rocky areas with caves (with ancient cave paintings in Migdia cave). The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area and the island of Ibiza can be seen on a clear day.

Probably the largest cemetary in the province (part of which is rumoured to lie under the Alkazaba holiday apartments) can also be found in the town.
