We (my wife - Julie - me and my two nephews Jake and Josh) spent the week with Debbie and Marcus and one of the highlights was placing a geocache at a remote beach near a place called Portman.
This area a little way east of Cartagena is full of old mining towns, including La Unión to the north. The landscape here is scattered with abandoned mines and winding mountain roads. It's all a bit eery and reminded me of a scene out of "The Hills Have Eyes".
We parked just off the road on a cliff edge which offered stunning views of the Mediteranean sea. Once parked we made our way down to the abondoned beach. The sand on the beach was dark black (wonder if that had something to do with the local geology here) and overlooked by caves in the cliffs and I swear that 3 of the caves worked together to give part of the cliff the impression of a skull.
Anyway, after splashing about in the sea (which was cold but bearable - even though I wussed out and wore a wetsuit) we decided to place an underwater Geocache - which Marcus had been busily preparing - in some rocks just off the shore.
Here are some of the pictures of our adventure...
The Cache: Jake, me and Josh with "treasure" to be hidden
The hike back to the car: I know it doesn't look it but we're really high up!
