The market city of Vélez-Málaga (just Vélez will do) is the capital of the Axarquía district in Málaga province on the Costa del Sol just a little way east along the coast from the city of Málaga.
Despite being very close to Málaga airport, Vélez-Málaga has one of its own (Axarquía airport).
Vélez is not what you'd consider a hot tourist destination (most holidaymakers skip this town in favour of Torre del Mar - 4km to the south) but for those looking there are plenty of interesting sites including: a castle with its impressive tower still intact, the 16th century Palacio del Marqués de Beniel and churches of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, Santa María la Mayor and San Juan Bautista.
The biggest fiesta of the year (Royal San Miguel) is held between September and October plus the Holy Week procession is definitely worth seeing.
Vélez-Málaga is one of the few remaining places in Europe where cockfighting is still allowed.
