No more than twenty years ago, most ‘normal’ people would consider the prospect of buying property abroad as something out of reach, something confined to the rich or very daring. Well, times have changed, as they consistently do. These days we are not thinking, “Wouldn’t it be nice to own a second home abroad?”, instead, we are thinking “WHERE will I buy my second home?”
Spain has traditionally been a popular choice, with its guarantee of sun and good food. Now, however, more and more ‘hot spots’ continue to pop up; Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Cyprus…all draw more than their fair share of foreign property purchasers. Certainly there is more than one country in which you can find sun and good food, so why choose Spain over any other country?
Well, aside from the fact that so many people just like you have already purchased property in Spain, and have been very happy with it (proof of the pudding that Spain is worth investing in); there are other reasons to choose Spain over other countries. Firstly, you will not be breaking down any barriers. Most barriers have already been broken down. Imagine moving over to Spain twenty years ago…would you find it easy? Not in the least. But these days, armed just with a mere ‘Hola’ in your vocabulary, you can successfully, and fairly easily, set up a shop or buy a home in Spain. There are English speaking real estate agents, English speaking schools, English speaking solicitors, and so on. These amenities are not so easily found in, for example, Bulgaria, and certainly not with such a wide choice as in Spain.
Next, a house in Spain means a house in the centre of it all. A trip to Morocco, in Africa, can cost you a mere week’s wages, from all the major airports, of which there are many, you can fly cheaply to England and Ireland, and, you are already on the continent, and so can catch a train easily to France, Germany, Italy, etc…
Living in Spain will give you an opportunity to learn Spanish, which is a language spoken in 21 nations. That opens up a lot of doors. Obviously, most of South and Central America speak Spanish and so you can travel freely across those countries without the discomfort of not being able to express what you need, or understand even simple directions. Perhaps not such an obvious statement, however, is to say that with Spanish you can even travel more comfortably to other non-Spanish speaking countries. In Italy and Portugal, you will have a high chance of being understood as the three languages are relatively similar. Also, if you go to, for example, France, and find you can’t find English speakers to help you out, you may be able to find some people who speak some Spanish instead. Knowing Spanish opens more doors than you may imagine.
Lastly, let’s not forget the magic of the country itself. Spaniards are a very warm, open and passionate people, and are easily integrated amongst. The food is delicious; from traditionally Spanish recipes such as Paella, to the high quality tastes of a simple tomato and olive oil salad, your taste buds will thank you for the rich abundance of flavours. Spain is a large country in which the landscape varies vastly; from beach to mountain, from forest to desert, it’s all there, and it’s all within a train’s journey of whichever town in which you decide to purchase your home. And finally, let’s end on a note that cannot be debated, Spain has some of the best weather in Europe. With temperatures neither soaring too high nor dropping too low, life in Spain is so complimented by its ideal Mediterranean climate.
